Dress for the Screen: Video Interview Tips That Make a Strong First Impression
By Jen Frazier, President, Prequel Solutions
One question I hear most from candidates is, “What should I wear for a video interview?” My answer is simple: wear what you would wear if you were walking into our office. First impressions matter, and your interviewer starts forming one the moment you turn on your camera. A screen doesn’t lower the bar.
What to Wear: Dress for Success
It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in. Even if the job is casual, the interview isn’t. Dressing well shows the employer you take the opportunity seriously.
- Wear a collared shirt or a blouse. It looks polished on camera and sets a professional tone.
- Consider a jacket. Going a step further is rarely a mistake, and it signals you came prepared.
- Make sure your hair is groomed. The camera frames your face and shoulders, so that’s where attention lands.
- Never wear a ball cap. No exceptions.
Definite No-Nos
- Never a tank top or T-shirt.
- Never a hoodie or graphic sweatshirt.
- Keep jewelry simple, not flashy. If you wear it, it shouldn’t compete with you for attention.
- No PJs or slippers. If your camera captures anything below the waist, dress the whole outfit.
Set Yourself Up to Succeed
- Log on at the right time. Aim for about five minutes early. Too early can catch the interviewer off guard while they’re still wrapping up another meeting. Late, even by a minute, sends the wrong message.
- Test your video technology. Open the meeting link early, install any updates, and check that your camera works and your face is well lit.
- Make sure your mic is working. Do a quick test call with a friend to make sure you can be heard clearly.
- Eliminate background noise. Silence your phone, close the door, and find a quiet space away from pets, TVs and household traffic.
- Blur your background. A clean, blurred backdrop keeps the focus on you, not what’s behind you.
The Bottom Line
A video interview is still a real interview. When you look the part and your technology works smoothly, the conversation can focus on what matters most: your skills, your experience, and the value you’ll bring to the team. Prepare like it counts, because it does.
